How many GCSEs will my son or daughter study?
The vast majority of students will study 9 GCSEs. They will be awarded five GCSEs in the core subjects - English Language, English Literature, Maths, Science (2 GCSEs) - and they will then supplement that with the 4 GCSEs they will be awarded in their 4 option subjects.
Will my son or daughter have a better chance of applying to the top universities if they study additional GCSE subjects out of school?
No. Universities currently consider A Level predicted grades to be a more accurate predictor of ability to study a university course. Also, universities are far more interested in the quality of qualifications achieved than the quantity. Year 13 students make successful applications to the top universities every year having taken 9 GCSEs at KS4
I would like my child to be considered for a different option pathway - what can I do?
If a child or parent would like to be considered for a different pathway, please email the school at the following address, enquiries@croxleydanes.herts.sch.uk, for the attention of Miss Olivier. Each request will be heard by a panel who will carefully review the reasons for the pathway change.
This decision will be based on the following factors:
Current working grades in their English, Maths and Science assessments
Scale scores and ability levels (using CATs scores) as a means of determining aptitude to study a particular subject.
Any other evidence you produce as a parent in support of your application
Do I have to use one of my options to study Separate Sciences if I want to be able to study Science A-levels in the Sixth Form?
No. It is not a requirement to study the Separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) to study those subjects at A level. The core provision of the double award (two GCSEs) Combined Science course is perfectly adequate preparation for A-levels in Science.
Can I change an option in September of Year 10?
If a change is possible on the timetable, and within the constraints of a student’s pathway, it can be made. All changes will need to be requested by the end of the first week in September 2026.
Can my child take a GCSE examination in a language other than French and Spanish?
Yes, if your child is proficient in another language and there is a GCSE available this can be done through the extra-curricular language option. Details can be found on our website here.
