FAQs
How many GCSEs will my child study?
The vast majority of students will study 9 GCSEs. They will be awarded five GCSEs in the core subjects - English Language, English Literature, Maths, Science (2 GCSEs) - and they will then supplement that with the 4 GCSEs they will be awarded in their 4 option subjects.
A small number of students will be awarded 8 GCSEs. These students will only take GCSEs in 3 option subjects because one of their option choices will be Core Skills. The Core Skills Support programme provides a small group of students additional English and Maths provision to give them the best possible chance of attaining a good grade in those subjects.
Will my son or daughter have a better chance of applying to the top universities if they study additional GCSE subjects out of school?
No. Universities currently consider A-Level predicted grades to be a more accurate assessment of ability to study a university course. Also, universities are far more interested in the quality of qualifications achieved than the quantity. Year 13 students make successful applications to the top universities every year having taken 9 GCSEs at KS4
Do I have to use one of my options to study Separate Sciences if I want to be able to study Science A-levels in the Sixth Form?
No. It is not a requirement to study the Separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) to study those subjects at A level. The core provision of the double award (two GCSEs) Combined Science course is perfectly adequate preparation for A-levels in Science.
Are there any subject choices that the school does not recommend?
We do not recommend that a student chooses two Technology subjects because the coursework burden would be substantial and it is a rather ‘narrow’ curriculum that will limit future choice beyond GCSE.
Can I change an option in September of Year 10?
If a change is possible on the timetable, and within the constraints of a student’s pathway, it can be made. All changes will need to be requested by the end of the first week in September 2025.
Can my child take a GCSE examination in a language other than French and Spanish?
Yes, if your child is proficient in another language and there is a GCSE available this can be done through the extra-curricular language option. Details can be found on our website.
