AIM


Cambridge National in Sport Studies will encourage students to think for themselves about the study of sport and the application to real life practical sport, leadership and evaluation of the skills required.


As part of the Cambridge National, students will cover:

• how technology is used in sport 

• how to develop as a team player and how to develop as a leader 

• plan, deliver and evaluate your own sports activity session 

• performing in front of an audience 

• the connection between sport and media, and the different ways that sport is represented

Unit R184: Contemporary issues in sport

In this unit students will learn about a range of topical and contemporary issues in sport, relating to; participation levels and barriers, promotion of values and ethical behaviour, the role of high-profile sporting events, the role of national governing bodies and how technology is used within sport. 


This question paper has three parts: 


NEA Component:  (60%)

Unit R185: Performance and leadership in sports activities (40%)

In this unit students will learn how to develop your skills as both a performer, in two different sporting activities, and as a leader in one activity. As a leader, students will have the opportunity to plan, lead and review safe and effective sporting activity sessions yourself. We recommend that students are participating in at least one sport outside school lessons and partake in the sports leaders level 2 course to support their assessment. This set assignment contains 5 tasks.


Unit R186: Sport and the media (20%) 

In this unit you will learn to explore both sides of these media sources and apply real life examples to demonstrate the nature of the relationship between media and sport. You will develop your ability to evaluate and interpret the different ways sport is represented by the media. This set assignment contains 3 tasks.


How do Cambridge Nationals Grades compare to GCSEs? Grades for Cambridge Nationals and for GCSEs align at key points. 


Level 1 covers GCSE grades 3–1 (or D–G) and Level 2 GCSE grades 9–4 (or A*–C). 

• The bottom of a Level 1 Pass is aligned to GCSE grade 1 

• The bottom of a Level 2 Pass is aligned to GCSE grade 4 

• The bottom of a Level 2 Distinction is aligned to GCSE grade 7
